Switzerland v Republic of Ireland Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Stade de Geneve - Euro 2020 Qualifier

Mick McCarthy's Republic of Ireland squad head to Switzerland looking for points to keep their Euro 2020 qualification on track.

Past Meetings

A late goal from David McGoldrick sealed a 1-1 draw in the Dublin leg of this tie last month, and McCarthy's side are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Switzerland.

Team News

Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic will make a late check on veteran defender Stefan Lichtsteiner, but he is expected to be passed fit, with Kevin Mbabu on standby.

McCarthy has given McGoldrick up until Monday night to join up with the squad in Switzerland, after he missed the 0-0 draw away in Georgia through injury. Enda Stevens is back following suspension, with Aaron Connolly and Alan Judge both pushing for a starting role for the visitors.

Switzerland v Republic of Ireland Preview and Predictions

Both sides are in a tense position on terms of qualifying for Euro 2020, with the Swiss having the advantage of a game in hand on McCarthy's team. They slipped to a late 1-0 defeat at home to Denmark a few days ago, meaning that a loss to the Irish would leave them needing a miracle to qualify automatically.

Ireland know they need to win this game to realistically keep their hopes alive, given the arithmetic of the group as things stand ahead of this huge game. However, a draw would not rule them out, but it would likely mean they would need a positive result from their final game at home to Denmark in November.

With so much pressure surrounding this game it is hard to see it being a classic, and even if it suits neither side, a draw looks likely - priced at 13/5. Ireland are unbeaten under McCarthy, and have not conceded more than once in any game since his return to the helm, and this one should be another low scorer - with under 2.5 total goals scored coming in at 7/10.

Recommended Bets

A 1-1 draw 6/1

Realistically both sides need to win this game, but they will be working hard to cancel each other out, in what should be a real battle in Geneva.

Shane Duffy to score anytime at 14/1

Neither side have an out and out goal scorer in their ranks in qualifying, and with McGoldrick potentially missing out, the Brighton defender could be Ireland's biggest threat - after he netted their late equaliser against Denmark earlier in the campaign.
