New Bookmakers Horse Racing Fans Watch Breeder's Cup Riders

- Grant Whittington

Since August, Art Collector has been thrilling new bookmakers horse racing fans as he’s managed to bag three consecutive wins in partnership with champion rider Luis Saez. However, since Saez has been booked to ride Essential Quality in the upcoming Breeder's Cup Classic, the Bill Mott-trained runner is urgently looking for a replacement rider for the prestigious event.

According to owner Bruce Lunsford, his first choice is none other than Hall of Famer Mike Smith. He's a 26-time Breeder's Cup champion and has won the race more times than any other rider.

Art Collector A Capable Runner

Lunsford said this week both he and Mott have long and trusted relationships with the champion jockey. He said Smith has a great deal of experience regarding what needs to be done. He also said he "liked" the Hall of Famer's riding style and that new bookmakers horse racing should keep an eye on him.

As for Art Collector, he's shown himself pretty capable of running a mile and an eighth with relative ease. He's registered impressive wins in the Woodward, Alydar, and Charles Town Classic, and according to his owner, hadn't even been pushing all that hard.

His performance at Charles Town had been especially impressive, said Lunsford. After trailing last year's winner, Sleepy Eyes Todd, Art Collector made for the upset of the day when he suddenly set off by smoothly moving around his rival on his way to the win.

The plan is for Mott to move Art Collector to California well ahead of the race. And chances are the Breeder's Cup Classic won't be the last we'll hear of the up-and-coming star.

We'll See More Of Him

Lunsford said he hoped to be able to have Art Collector compete for at least two more years. Even so, he said he planned on letting the star of the show determine when he's ready to retire. Lunsford also said the plan is to keep taking good care of the champion runner by not racing him too often.

The Breeder's Cup draws only the best horses from around the world. This year's edition will take place on 5 and 6 November and will be hosted by California's Del Mar racetrack.

The course location changes each year. Previous locations have included Churchill Downs, Monmouth Park, Santa Anita and Keeneland.

This year's race favourites at the new betting sites are:

  • Knicks Go: 5/2
  • Essential Quality: 11/4
  • Medina Spirit: 5/1
  • Hot Rod Charlie: 5/1
  • Max Player: 7/1
  • Art Collector: 10/1
  • Tripoli: 16/1
  • Idol: 20/1
  • Express Train: 40/1
  • Stilleto Boy: 50/1

The prize money up for grabs is a sensational US$3.3 million.
