Chelsea Forks Out Big Money For New Talent

01/09/22

- Grant Whittington

Premier League FC Chelsea could be getting ready to fork out as much as £350 million in summer spending and the pursuance of deadline-deals for Josko Gvardiol and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Earlier this week, the figure during the first window under Chelsea’s new ownership passed the £250 million-mark after the club spent £75 million on signing Leicester’s Wesley Fofana.

Push For Aubameyang

When on Wednesday Chelsea’s offer for Aubameyang (£13 million) plus Marcos Alonso was rejected, the club immediately tabled a new bid, after which talks turned the bend and to the point of further discussions regarding specific add-ons and structure. Aubameyang left Arsenal for Barca in February but has indicated his readiness to return to the Premier League by accepting the re-negotiated deal with Chelsea.

The club earlier this week requested access to Aubameyang’s medical details, even though this won’t be considered a make-or-break situation. The star forward had his jaw injured during a robbery at his home last weekend and is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks.

Aubameyang tweeted on the weekend how violent trespassers had broken into his home and issued threats to his family and children – only to flee with some of the family’s belongings. He said the experience of no longer being safe in one’s own home is something that is difficult to come to terms to.

Smashing The Payment Barrier

Fofana, who has been signed to a seven-year deal with the club, this week became the third player to join Chelsea on a deal exceeding £50 million, following deals with Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling.

Chelsea has indicated itself willing to spend another £75 million on securing Gvardiol from RB Leipzig, He’ll be joining the Blues after finishing his current season with the German FC. This means he’ll be linking up with Chelsea in June next year.

Fofana Happy To Depart

During his farewell message on social media, Fofana could not resist the temptation to take a stab at Leicester manager, Brendan Rodgers. While thanking fans for their backing, he insinuated that his supporters had been led to believe that he had not always respected his club due to misleading messages and comments.

Leicester, meanwhile, have started talks with Atalanta for winger Jeremie Boga. Their only signing of the summer has been with backup goalie Alex Smithies.

Following a season in the Championship with Birmingham, Boga has said that he is keen to return to England. Birmingham had acquired him on loan from the Blues.
