Fortnite Online eSports Betting

  • Genre: Multiplayer Online Battle Royale video game
  • Format: TBD
  • Publisher: Epic Games

Fortnite is one of the most intriguing eSports games to be fully released in 2018. Developed by Epic Gaming in 2017, it was originally designed as a Player Versus Environment (PVE) setup where the aim is to survive and save the world. At the time of launching, Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) was rapidly increasing in popularity in gaming communities across the globe. In response, Epic Games decided to re-tool their existing game engine and release their very own free-to-play Battle Royale Mode for Fortnite.

The new mode featured an enhanced player-versus-player (PVP) setup that can accommodate up to 100 people. This new battle format proved to be an instant hit, and attracted over 1 million players on its debut release. By December 2017 Fortnite: Battle Royale recorded 1.3 million concurrent users and over 30 million players in total. In 2018 it has enjoyed even more success, and is well on its way to becoming one of the newest eSports games on the circuit.

Fortnite: Save the World

Save the World is the original release. This version is played with 4 players who cooperate towards a common objective. The action takes place in a post-apocalyptic earth where a fluke storm causes 98% of the world’s population to disappear. The remaining survivors are attacked by zombie-like creatures called “husks”. The 4 players who enter the ‘earth’ take on the role of commanders of a home base shelters.

Players must gather resources, defend equipment and save survivors. The object is also to collect data on the storm or push back the storm altogether, and ultimately survive. From completed missions players are awarded items, which can include weapons, hero characters and level-up points. It is important to note that while Fortnite: Save the World has a reasonable following, it does not even come close to the popularity and gamer numbers of its successor, Battle Royale. If the game were to become fully recognised eSport, Battle Royale would be the mode in use.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

Since its release in July 2017, Fortnite Battle Royale has attracted more than 125 million gamers. Like all Battle Royale releases, the goal is simply to be the last player or team standing. The action kicks off with everyone (up to 100 people) boarding a flying party bus, which is propelled by balloons. The bus then transports the players to an island which serves as the map or area for the game. Players exit the bus and land on the island via parachute and head towards their starting point, which can be chosen by each individual participant.

At the start, the Island is a massive colourful world with unique cities and lands. Each city has its own style of structures, with some being urban while others feature massive skyscrapers. Loot items are randomly scattered throughout the entire island. These can include weapons, explosives and healing powers. To make things more interesting, the islands is subjected to a circling “Blue Storm” which forces the area to shrink and the characters to encounter each other more often. As the game develops, the available land area shrinks even further to such a point where all of the characters have no choice but to engage with each other rather than hide or build structures.

Implementing Strategies

Like many other battle-style eSports games, Fortnite’s gameplay mainly involves gathering weapons and resources. The idea is to find a good vantage point, create defensive structures, collect the most gear and find the most powerful weapons. At the start, most of the loot is located at the centre of the map. Players must decide whether to risk going out into the open early on to find loot or to keep hidden and create defensive structures for later battles. The building feature adds a new dimension to the genre where players can actively construct defensive structure or gain a vantage point. Structures can also be created as a “red herring” in order to confuse enemies about where you are located. This creates the opportunity for surprise attacks.

Moving In To eSports

Being fairly new to the competitive gaming market, Fortnite has yet to become a fully-fledged eSport with professional teams and leagues. When it was initially released, Epic Games committed to providing $100million to funding tournaments. We are now seeing the fruits of this commitment with the first official tournament sponsored by Epic. Dubbed the Summertime Skirmish x Twitch Rivals, the new league will is played over 8 weeks with up to $8 million in prize money up for grabs. The games are split into regions with the format changing each week. Teams are awarded points depending on how many eliminations they accrue and their final Royale placement.

Betting Guide

Since the Summer Skirmish is the first and only competitive Fortnite tournament or league, there are only a handful of bookmakers offering bets on the tournament. It also means that the number of markets is limited as the match and outright bets. Unlike Dota 2 or League of Legends, the game specifics are difficult to nail down for now. As a result, most of the eSports sites will be offering standard match bets where you are predicting the Royale winner, as well as the team or individual to execute the most eliminations.

Tournament betting is also available where you place bets on which team will win the tournament outright, which teams will make the finals and who will progress at every stage of the competition. Since this is the first competition of its kind, the teams will all have similar odds at the start of the tournament.

As teams progress and show their skills, their odds will steadily decrease while the teams with the fewest wins will show the highest odds. The successful running of the Summer Skirmish will most certainly attract more professional teams and inspire larger tournaments, eventually cementing Fortnight’s place as one of the top eSports games in the industry.
